The Douglas Brain Imaging Centre (BIC), Douglas Mental Health University Institute, Montreal, Canada, was established in 2011 and houses a Siemens 3T Magnetom Trio MRI Scanner for human research, and a Bruker 7T Biospec 70/30 USR MRI Scanner for small animal research, and labs specialized in optogenetics, electroencephalography (EEG) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).  

The Douglas BIC is a vibrant research centre composed of 9 research labs which host 40+ student and post-doctoral researchers. The Centre’s is also composed of core non-academic staff who ensure quality imaging and data management services to researchers and students.  Our focus is on clinical and pre-clinical neuroscience research in the area of mental health and we are actively involved in 23 academic and industry sponsored research projects.

Job Description: The Douglas BIC is seeking a full-time small animal MRI Technologist/RA to support our preclinical imaging program on the Bruker 7T Biospec 70/30 USR MRI Scanner. We are seeking a candidate who is a team player with excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, preferably in both French and English, who enjoys helping people.
The successful candidate will work in a dynamic research environment. Her or his job would entail working closely with researchers, staff and trainees to: a) maintain and assure optimal performance on the 7T Bruker MRI unit; b) provide training and/or MRI scanning services to users; c) be well versed on current SOPs at the Centre and maintain, update and create SOPs as needed; d) assist in administration and record keeping for the 7T MRI unit as needed. With training and advancement the candidate will be expected to also: a)  develop, optimize and assist with preclinical imaging projects; b) keep up to date on advanced imaging technologies and methodologies available and educate the BIC members on new methods; c) explore and develop new methods and educate the Douglas BIC community about new imaging technologies; and, d) promote interaction between developers of new imaging technology and potential users.

Required Qualifications (must be mentioned on application/resume):

  • Minimum: B.Sc. degree in biology/neuroscience/psychology/engineering
  • Greater than 2 yrs experience with pre-clinical, in vivo imaging of small animals, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant research experience to equal six years.
  • Experience with handling/training small animals (i.e. mice, rats etc); or willingness to learn.
  • Familiarity with image processing software for image processing and image analysis, along with automation of tasks in these programs.
  • Experience in laboratory management.
  • Must be helpful and have strong interpersonal skills and willingness to work well with researchers, staff and trainees to help develop, scan and support new and ongoing research projects at the Douglas BIC.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate Degree in biomedical engineering, biology, neuroscience and/or psychology
  • Experience conducting in vivo small animal MRI studies on at 7T Bruker system (or comparable MRI system).
  • Experience using 3D Plastic Printer to build peripherals
  • Experience with sequence development or optimization on the 7T Bruker system
  • Experience with animal anesthesia and behavioral neuroscience

Preference will be given to applicants who are fluently bilingual in French and English.
